The novel opens in 1900 with the birth of Ammachi, the first of the family to be afflicted. Ammachi’s mother, Lakshmi, is a devout Hindu who believes that the drownings are a curse from the gods. She vows to keep Ammachi away from water, but her efforts are ultimately futile. Ammachi drowns at the age of 12, just like her grandmother before her.

The next generation of the family is represented by Ammachi’s daughter, Kalyani. Kalyani is determined to break the curse, and she becomes a doctor. She studies the drownings and eventually discovers that they are caused by a rare genetic disorder. Kalyani is able to develop a treatment for the disorder, and the drownings finally come to an end.

The final generation of the family is represented by Kalyani’s son, Arjun. Arjun is a young doctor whose mother has died and he is trying to come out of this grief. He travels to Kerala to learn more about his family’s history. After moving to Kerala, he learns about a curse that has been haunting his family for generations.

The Covenant of Water is a beautifully written novel that explores themes of family, loss, and redemption.
